Thanks to Fox Searchlight Screenings, my daughter and I were able to see a screening of Gifted a few days before it's official release.  I have watched the trailers for the movie and they did not prepare me for the emotional swigs I had while watching it.

If you have not seen the trailer yet, the basic premise of the movie is:

Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy - his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) - in a coastal town in Florida. Frank's plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.  (Source:  Gifted - About on Facebook)

From the start of the movie, my daughter and I were laughing.  Mckenna Grace is just so spirited in her acting and Octavia Spencer is so sassy that you can not help but cracking up at their zingers though out the movie.  Chis Evans was very believable as a loving uncle, and even at the end of the movie, my daughter and I still had stabby hate for Lindsay Duncan.  I am not really familiar with any other work by actress Jenny Slate, but she was very convincing as Bonnie.  The one character that stole a few moments of the movie was Fred the one eyed cat.  I have to say that the scenes in family court were very well done.  They were not overly intense and there were even some moments of levity to break up some of the tension.  There are some tear jerker moments, and my daughter and I did cry briefly.  Thankfully those were short moments, and shortly after some hand clapping and cheering moments ensued.  Be sure to have some tissue when you watch this.
