Cookies and milk is a thing at my house. Actually, milk in general is a thing in my house since I go through 2-3 gallons a week, and that is down from the 3-4 a week when my older daughter was still home. While no one in my immediate family has tummy troubles when we drink milk, we do have extended family with food allergies or dietary restrictions, and I try to keep up with the most basic of understandings of each issue. This includes extended family that avoid dairy products for a variety of reasons. There is an independent study out that shows that 1 in 4 people have discomfort after drinking milk, though only 5% - 7% of the population has been clinically diagnosed with lactose intolerance.
Enter a2 Milk ®. I honestly had no idea what this brand was all about and learned that first and foremost, it is real milk! Because it is real milk that comes from real cows, it also tastes and acts like conventional milk. While we normally drink 2% milk, I was only able to find find whole a2 Milk ® at my local store. Not a biggie for me since I actually prefer whole milk, so this ended up being a bit of a treat for me. It is available in 2%, 1%, and fat free as well. My family enjoyed some cookies and milk as a snack, and no one knew they were not drinking conventional milk. I also used it while making my morning coffee and did not notice any difference in taste or texture, which is more than I can say for other milk substitutes that are rice, nut, or bean based. a2 Milk® has more calcium than the aforementioned milk substitutes and only comes from specially selected a2 cows, whose milk is naturally free of the A1 protein, which is the protein that can cause discomfort in people after consuming daily products.
If you have not been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, a2 Milk ® just might let you get back to enjoying cookies and milk again. Be sure to check out availability near you with the Store Locator. The a2 Milk® Company™ is working to expand the a2 herd and has partnered with U.S. family dairy farmers in upstate New York and the Midwest and the milk is completely free from growth hormones, rBST, antibiotics and has no artificial ingredients or additives.

Grab some a2 Milk ® and pair it up with your favorite cookie, or give the Spiced Thumbprint Cookies below a try.
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, room temperature
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp rum extract
Preheat oven to 350. In large mixing bowl cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and rum extract and mix together. In separate bowl sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Slowly add four to butter and mix until combined. The dough will be on the thicker side. Roll about 1 teaspoon dough into a ball and place onto cookie sheet. Use your thumb or the end of a large wooden spoon to make a thumbprint dent into the center, then add about 1/4 teaspoon of your favorite jam to the center. Bake for 12-14 minutes and let cool before moving to cooling rack.
