I do not do a lot of BBQing, but I love cooking meats in the oven. I have a tendency to overcook meats in the oven, so I was looking forward to checking out the Frazoni Digital Bbq & Cooking Thermometer with Probe & Timer that I received in exchange for my honest review.
The Frazoni Digital Bbq Cooking Thermometer is comfortable to hold in the hand. You need one AAA battery and it installs in the back. I was a little confused by the second battery slot, then I realized it was just a storage spot for the battery, or even a second battery. This is pretty smart as I go in spurts with oven cooking, and placing the battery into the storage slot is a great way to conserve the battery, and prevent corrosion, or if you use it a lot, you never have to scrounge for a battery when the installed one needs to be replaced.
I picked up a lovely black forest ham and set up the Franzoni Digital Thermometer to the suggested temperature. The probe has a long line, so I was able to set the thermometer on the counter next to the oven, and still had some slack to move it around. The cord is thin and did not prevent my oven from sealing up. The cord outside the stayed cool to the touch even as the temperature went up in the meat. The probe was sharp enough to easily pierce into the ham, but not so sharp that I was afraid of accidentally poking myself.
I love the large display on the Frazoni Thermometer. It gives the read out of what the current probe temperature is, and what the target temperature is, and can be set for Celsius or Fahrenheit. There is also a timer setting that I have yet to test out. It does have a kickstand so I can set it up and glance at the front and see all the relevant information as I prep other food in the kitchen. I was not able to get the little kickstand to pop out without opening the back up, but I'm sure it will get easier with use. The alarm that sounds when the target temperature was loud enough for me to hear from the living room, though it took me a minute to figure out what the sound was the first time I heard it. I poked the ham a couple more times just to be sure it was warmed all the way through and found the temertaure reading to be quick, and my ham turned out wonderful.
Clean up was easy as it was only the probe that needed to be washed, and that was easily accomplished with some warm water and a soapy sponge. For storage, I popped the back open and put the battery into the second storage slot, and wound the cord around the unit. There is a clip in the back with just enough room to slip the probe through to keep it in place.
