October Recipe ~ Twister Dogs

"But Mom!!!  You said!!"  Remind me to never agree to anything while in a food coma at the state fair.  Apparently I agreed to try and make a hot dog wrapped in a potato at some point.  What was I thinking?  I was not.  Again with the food coma, let alone I don't have a fryer and had to figure out how to do this in the oven.  I happen to have one of those apple, peeler, corer gizmos, so after a quick thought on how to make this happen, here is my creation.





 Ingredients:

1 package hot dogs
4 peeled, cored, spiral sliced potatoes
toothpicks
olive oil
salt pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400.
Dunk potato spirals in olive oil.  This will help the potatoes cook, keep the seasonings on better and prevent the potato edges from sticking to the baking sheet. Take spiral sliced potato and wrap around the hot dog, leaving a gap between slices so potato will cook.  Each hot dog took about half of one potato.  Secure ends of potato spiral to ends of hot dogs with tooth picks.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.  Place on baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.  Remove tooth picks before serving.


These were not the super crispy, deep fried potatoes that were wrapped around foot long hot dogs at the state fair, but they were very tasty and I've gone up the super cool mom ladder for doing this.  I'm sure my daughter will twist my arm, and the apple peeler crank, to do this one again.  On a side note....I will no longer be boiling my hot dogs in a pot of water on the stove if grilling them outside is not an option.  They tasted SOOOO much better coming out of the oven.
